Write Through It
by Kate McKean
*for my fellow writers*
👆🏻 If you want to pursue the traditional publishing path (vs self-publishing) this one is for you! If you’re already pretty far along (published) you probably learned this stuff via trial by fire, but if not, this is an incredibly useful overview of how to get from writing to publishing. This is the book I wish I had before I started querying the first time four years ago and learned a bunch of it the hard way. It’s a comprehensive how-to on getting from The End on a manuscript to querying to (hopefully) an offer of rep to a publishing deal without losing your mind.
I found this book to be an insanely helpful primer on the business side of writing, but also McKean is hysterical. Reading the book was fun, like having a drink/cup of tea/cup of coffee with a good friend. It’s laugh out loud hilarious but conversational, and it’s real talk. A basic overview that doesn’t talk down to you, with encouragement and realism but no toxic positivity or negativity either. I left the book feeling empowered but not blindly hopeful, and I highly encourage anyone querying (or planning to) read this so they go in fully prepared for what the experience will be.
